Heart & Soul

Music and health have shared a connection for a very long time. The Chinese character for medicine includes the character for music. In ancient Greece, music was used to ease stress, promote sleep, and soothe pain, while Native Americans and Africans used singing and chanting as part of their healing rituals. Recent scientific findings are linking music to hearts and heart health.

In fact, the beat of your heart may be more closely connected to musical beats than you know.
New research shows that music may truly be instrumental (pun intended!) in heart-health. Findings suggest that music is sensed and processed at a subconscious level, closely mirrored by autonomic cardiovascular responses. While there is still discussion and research around the exact link, the type of music and the exact mechanism, researchers are finding that music may benefit your heart in the following ways:• Blood pressure control and rehabilitation• Lowered stress, respiration and heart rate from soothing, rhythmically homogenous sounds

• Ease of pain and distress after cardiac surgery

• Provides a pleasant coping strategy and imparts a feeling of control when used with patients recovering from a heart attack or cardiovascular condition

• Increased blood flow from dilated (expanded) blood vessels from listening to music that causes feelings of joyfulness
